Record Reviews #1

Here is the first in an on-going series of reviews. Records below are recent purchases, or I've just gotten around to listening to them.

If you want to mail your record(s) in for review, please do so. I'm broke, and can't buy as many records as I'd like to.

Baseball Furies
"Lost Ones" 7inch
Alien Snatch

Their last record on Big Neck was a little disappointing, but this band proves they are still awesome with this 3-song 7inch. Alien Snatch is becoming one of my favorite labels, and this release falls under some of the better ones. This is one of the best 7inches I’ve heard this year. Also Includes a great cover of the Reatards “Quite All Right.” Simple, good-looking cover and three great tunes.

Th' Losin'’ Streaks
"3 X 4"” 7inch
Dollar Record Records

One of thee best current Sacramento bands, Th’ Losin’ Streaks are a nostalgic 60s garage/rock-n-roll band, that do it better than several from that era. After their awesome LP on Slovenly, we’ve all been waiting around for a follow up. The A side is a song that was on Sounds of Violence- “Beg, Steal or Borrow”. “Outside” is a good Downliners Sect cover. The best song on here is the b-side. “Bad News Better Good” really gets you revved up for that next record… Chris Woodhouse even plays 2nd guitar on that track (he also recorded this 7inch and the first record).

Manikins/Ulcers
Split 7inch
P Trash Records

I’ve been hearing more and more of the Manikins from Sweden, care of Mario at Plastic Idol who is releasing a 7inch by them in the near future. The stuff I’ve heard is a very catchy, fun brand of power pop and punk rock. The songs on this 7inch aren’t as poppy as what I’ve previously heard, but still good. The pairing is perfect; both bands have that fast-paced rock and roll thing down. The last track of each side is a cover of the other. I’m more prone to the Manikins side, but both are good.
