Out of Order Release for 2009

I should keep up with this blog more, seriously. With that, I'm announcing now that I will be co-releasing a record next year with Orange Regret Records. We're putting out a 7" by local kid Green Green. It's a cool very lo-fi bedroom-indie-punk-fuzz kind of thing.

I'm bummed that I didn't keep with the goal of releasing at least one record a year, but when you have no money and your house burns down, I guess that gives you a good excuse!

None the less, I'm really looking forward to this release, and I'm actually living in a place that can accommodate stuffing records!

Please keep tuned to the blog and my website, www.outoforderrecords.com.

I'll try to post more!

Go Vote!

It's election day! Fit time in your day to drop by the polls. I've already voted via absentee. If you have your absentee ballot and didn't mail it, you have to drop it off at a polling place IN YOUR COUNTY. That's important- it's too late to mail it, but you can bring it to any polling place that's in your county.

In California, please vote on the props.
Some of the important ones are:

Prop 2- Vote Yes (Give animals more space)
Prop 4- Vote No (Keep it so minors do not have to report abortions to parents)
Prop 8- Vote No (To keep gay marriage legal)

I would comment on the other props, but I'm no expert, these three are extremely important.

Have a great day! Don't forget, there's a Midtown Monthly party tonight at the Press Club and th' Losin' Streaks play at 10pm. I don't think I can make it, but you should!

Mo' Music Blogs

Although I'm on the internet a lot, I don't know too many music blogs and am trying to extent that. I've been too busy and trying to save money that I haven't visited any record stores (gasp) besides where I work. I'd love to sample some new music and add them on to my purchase list. I just discovered OngakuBaku, which is great, and have been keeping up on System of Romance. Speaking of which, you can get the whole Algebra Suicide collection, which is super hard to find. Great minimalist synth-post punk.

If you know of other great ones, please post them in the comment section.

I'm still in the process of house-hunting and drowning in work. More blog posting soon.........

OPERATION: RESTORE MAXIMUM FREEDOM VI

On Saturday, October 11, 2008 ten groups will take to the stage of Plainfield Station to rock Operation: Restore Maximum Freedom VI, the DIY underground music festival presented by freeform alternative KDVS 90.3FM in Davis.

It kicks off at 1:30pm with KDVS DJs spinning killer tracks from this year's top albums. The live music starts blasting at 2pm, with an eight hour roller coaster of punk to experimental to raw folk to indie to psych until 10pm sharp. All this is happening at Plainfield Station, 23944 County Road 98, just north of Davis. Best burgers, killer tacos, and beer bar for 21+.

$7 presale/student and $10 general door admission feeds the hungry touring vans and artists.

Presale tickets are currently available at Armadillo Records in Davis and through our PayPal button on our Myspace page...
http://www.myspace.com/maximumfreedom

Group bike rides are leaving from Davis, as well as a shuttle bus for those too inebriated to keep upright on two wheels. Maximum Freedom has developed a strong tradition of biking to the festival. For the past five fests, people have biked from as far away as the Bay Area to see this unique event! Bike rides leave from Davis at 1pm and 4pm, returning from Plainfield at 10:30pm.

The free KDVS shuttle bus will leave Davis at 1:30pm and 6:30pm, returning from Plainfield at 6pm and 10:30pm.

Driving Directions:
From I-80, take 113 north for a few miles. Exit at Covell blvd. and turn left. Turn right at County Road 98. You will see the Plainfield Station on your left, right after the intersection of County Roads 98 and 29.

Check our DavisWiki and Myspace pages for more updates! And stay tuned to KDVS 90.3 FM or http://www.kdvs.org/ for music from the featured bands, ticket giveaways and more information.

The Lineup:

LSD & the Search for God

Described quite accurately as dreamy indie-warp by the San Francisco Chronicle, this SF group has been compared to My Bloody Valentine, Luna, Spacemen 3, and the Telescopes, with its uniquely moving blend of psychedelic shoegaze indie rock.

Traditional Fools
Shrieking buzzing guitars and raw vocals meet punk melodies to send a killer garage punk rock n roll lighting bolt straight down your spine and get your feet dancing.

Blackblack
LA indie rock ushers out the summer with ebola-catchy lyrics melodies that make you want to dance, then takes a step back to reveal beautifully cute indie pop.

Ohioan
Will this wandering Portland native bard be able to hitchhike his way down the coast in time for ORMF? You'd better hope so, or you ll miss his powerful, sorrowful, honest folk brewed on the roads of America.

Inca Ore
Surreal experimental that must be witnessed to realize the warping of your mental state.

Hexlove
The drummer from Sacramento's Who's You're Favorite Son, God? and Prints launches forth in his solo drum n' ambient experimental crusade against lameosity and the expected.

Beware of the Knight
A mysterious blast from the past, the distilled essence of Sacto '95 Loft in psych/weird/garagepunk form, manifesting itself in a Sacramento rocker playing his first live show in a long, long time.

Countless Others
Feedback fuzzed up, messed up, roadkill raw, garagey rock n roll hailing from The City. What else can you say?

Religious Girls
Forged from the ruins of Destroy Tokyo, this Eastbay experimental electronic rock project takes convention out behind the shed and shoots it.

San Fransisco Water Cooler
Local lords of the psych garage, the sound flows like something that cannot be described, only felt. A KDVS Recordings featured artist!

Mattress TONIGHT at Luigi's Fun Garden

Mattress is playing tonight in Sacramento! Read my blurb in the Midtown Monthly blog.

Recommended Music: Jeremy Jay

If you are a fan of pop music, you should track down records from JEREMY JAY. He makes really nice, low key fun music. Great for mornings at home while relaxing or up late working on projects. His records have been trickling into KDVS for the past couple of years and I've enjoyed all of them. He played in Sacramento last month at Luigi's Fun Garden and him and his band put on a great show.

Most of his stuff has been released on K Records. Although they only have his newest release, A Place Where We Could Go in stock.

-Listen/Watch "Airwalker"
-Listen/Watch my favorite Jeremy Jay Song "Escape to Aspen" (that guitar riff is so good during the chorus!!)

Tonevendor, formally of Sacramento, now in Florida has a bunch of his records in stock! Find them here.

I'll bring my camera this time. YAY! I'm actually getting out of town. I literally worked almost every day this summer with the abundance of extra summer jobs I did. Phew. Time for some fun.

HOLLEEE SHIT

WHO WANTS TO GO TO RENO?!?

Thursday, July 31, 2008

Hey Sacramento! Be Careful!

Ladies (and everyone for that matter) BE CAREFUL! Someone is attacking women around 24th-26th streets on E in Midtown.

http://cbs13.com/local/midtown.sacramento.sexual.2.784320.html

This is very close to where I used to live, and I know several of you do too. I used to walk around by myself a lot and never felt in danger. Please warn your family and friends and be careful!

Also in the news, Corti Bros is losing their lease. Another reason to support small businesses! Big business is fucked up! Even though I'm in Davis now, I'm going to try to make it back over there before they move and get some of their rad beer and other goodies.

Keep it real,

-HK

Weekend Round-up + Tuesday Show!

I hope you got the news that the Ohsees show was moved to the Witchdome on Saturday. The show was awesome! Standard Tribesmen are really gelling together- the sax sounds a lot better. They just need some new songs now. I stayed outside for Witch Hats to avoid the hot basement, and accounts said they were OK. I could hear them. Yellow Fever is a really cool indie / post punky band who are amazing! I can't believe I've never heard them before. Female vox reminds me of Liliput/Raincoats. Listen to them on myspace and buy their stuff!! Ohsees were fantastic as always. The new record - The Masters Bedroom is Worth Spending the Night in is out on snazzy purple vinyl and the new live CD/DVD is out as well.

Tuesday is the EAT SKULL show in Davis. The record is OK. I'm hoping I am very impressed when I see them live. I keep missing them. English Singles are also playing- who are getting better and better. Don't miss it! I hope I don't...

Ohsees this weekend!!

Super sweet show this weekend in Sacto. Hope to see you there! Be respectful....maybe Rick's Dessert Diner beforehand?!?! I recommend the Chocoalte Caramel Mousse Tart! mmmmmmmmmmmmm.

Welcome to California

Ugh, the weather is awful here in the central valley of California. We're in the middle of a 100+ degree heat wave, and to make it worse, the hundreds of fires burning throughout the state are causing smoke to choke up the air, and the air quality is flat out unsafe. It looks overcast outside, but it's really smoke, and the sun looks orange.

Why do people worry so much about earthquakes, when the fires have been much worse?

Anyways, enough of that. Just taking a quick lunch break. Thought I'd let you know I got a button maker, so if you need some 1" buttons, please get in touch. I'd love to pay off this machine quick!

There's going to be a great selection this year around- music, books, crafts, zines, etc. I'm stoked!

Coffe Mugs!

Holy crap, I've had a dream, and that dream is to one day make mugs- not specifically Out of Order ones, but maybe something generic like records or something on them.

I just heard about these mugs made from corn, which are biodegradable, and aren't as brittle as ceramic. These look really cool. There are already people using these and they look neat. I'm going to have to track one down.

I'm way too poor right now, but maybe in the future when I get some extra money, I may try to make some. Leave a comment if you'd be interested in buying a cool coffee mug! I'd sell them cheap, probably $10 or less...

Hey all,

I'm having problems with the Out of Order COMIX blog (not this one). It's some blogger-issue with blogs that post via FTP to another website.

Better Beatles!!

Do you have this record yet? Well you should. This is a minimal synth band doing all Beatles covers in a way that you never thought you'd hear the Beatles. "I'm Down", "Lady Madonna", "Can't Buy Me Love" and the rest will blow your mind while you tap along and forget how the real songs go. Seriously, this is a major treat, and you deserve it. Your turntable deserves it. Go fetch!

Buy it now from Hook or Crook Records or your local record store!

Report from Reno Part. II

I am home now, but I am continuing my report from Reno where I attended the Sticker Guy 15th Anniversary show. (This is a music blog, of all things!)

Check out these photos someone took. We even made it in a few!

After the Bananas, we caught thee mighty SPITS, who are one of the greatest modern punk bands to ever live. Did you know Ernie Quentero is now their keyboardist? Besides from being in the Spits, Ernie is one of the nicest, coolest dudes and I usually run into him a few times a year. He has filmed and toured with some awesome bands, including the above mentioned, and the Black Lips. I did an interview with him for my "Punk Rock Roadies" article from the last Out of Order Zine. Also, check out his other band, Slab City!!

The Spits, as you'd expect, were awesome in their Reagan masks, and white cloaks. They played a bunch of the greats from their Slovenly release, and their first record, and even a few from the last one like "Witch Hunt" and "Nuclear Bomb". I sung along, of course. The crowd really enjoyed them, especially this dude in front of us who, instead of pounding his fist in the air, would pound his skateboard in the air. It was bizarre, and annoying. (Check out the picture to the right. We're in there somewhere.)

While chatting with Ernie, I also was confirmed the sad news that indeed, the Dissimilars broke up. I inform you with great sadness. They were the first release on Out of Order Records and were the band that got the label off it's feet. Many thanks to DJ Rick for introducing me to the band, Larry for his wisdom and drunk phone calls, Jimmy for his smart remarks and sincerity, Hadi for his surprise jokes, and Nate, well Nate was the quiet one. Seriously, on meeting these guys I knew they were #1 dudes and I will never have any regrets on releasing the Jimmy's Room 7". The record is out of print, and will not be re-pressed. And it's better than the Plastic Idol one! Bam. Aww, I love both of them. I always had a blast when they made it up to Northern California to visit, and my only regret is that they didn't get better gigs when they were here.

I'll continue this report later...I've got a meeting to go to!

Report from Reno

Hey all, I'm in Reno for the Sticker Guy anniversary, and it's also my first trip to Reno. Ever notice as soon as you cross out of California, the roads suddenly get better? What the hell is up with that? California needs to step it up. Anyways, Reno = smooth roads. Once you get near the city, you see all the lights and that's when you realize you are entering the next dimension...

The 2-day show, excuse me, "party" is at this place in Reno called Club Underground. They have a terrible website. The club is pretty big, and there are two stages, which make the pace of the music awesome! There is a main stage and a bar stage. The bar stage is smaller, but that room makes it a little better to see the bands. The main stage actually reminds me a little bit of Gilman street, with the big open space.

We got to the venue around 9:30 or so and there was a huuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuuge line outside, so we had to wait about 20 minutes and missed the Juveniles, a local Reno band I'd wanted to see. They have that sloppy-punk Trashies/Spits thing going on. Oh well. We got inside and started looking for our Sacto friends that'd be there, including Heckasac and the Bananas crew.

We hit the bar, and there was very little beer, just lots and lots of hard alcohol. And then I saw Blue Moon on tap and I was sold. I bought Andrew and I beer and about passed out when the Bartender said "$10". $5 for a fucking beer?! It wasn't even very good- for some reason, it tasted more like flat budweiser. With a tip, that was $12 total. DOH!

As I reeled from the shock, we got to see NOBUNNY from Oakland, who coincidently have new Oakland resident, Max Trashie, from the Trashies!! They all wore funny masks and put on a fun show. Once they finished, the announcer got on stage and lead us to the Bar Stage to catch Sacto's own the BANANAS! The kids just love THE BANANAS. We soon found Heckasac. After some small talk, we pointed at each others beers and yelled, "FIVE DOLLARS?!?".

The Bananas put on a great show. People went pretty apeshit. Early in the set, a beer went flying in the air. I looked over, and Andrew got the worst of it. Beer dripped off his hair, as if he'd just stepped under a beer shower. He was a trooper, though.
The beer stage is totally partied out with sparkly streamers hanging all over the place. For the Bananas, it just fits. They played a nice mix of new and old songs...I can't wait for the new record!!

In between bands, DJs play music, which is rad, but the music is way too loud, to the point where you can't talk to anyone without yelling. The mix of yelling to the person next to you, and breathing in the smokey air- (they can smoke indoors in Reno), is enough to make you appreciate places like California where you don't have to deal with that. I'm not wussing out, I'm just saying that if you want to smoke, that's fine, but I'd rather not get cancer from breathing in some shitty second-hand smoke. Plus, all my clothes totally reek. Oh well, what'dya gonna do.

Next Post: The rest of Friday night, including the Spits, Scared of Chaka, pros & cons.

Sticker Guy 15th Anniversary

I'm in Reno for the Sticker Guy 15th anniversary! I'll be posting Reports from Reno...I may even edit them later and include this in the next Out of Order Zine....we'll see.

Synth + Weird 80s Videos

The Normal "TV OD"
Why? Amazing synth classic. First record on Mute Records, and the owner of the label is in the band!!

Klaus Nomi "Falling in Love Again"
Why? Strange video, kinda dirty with man-boobs and tons of innuendo.

Human League "Do or Die"
Why? Out of sync keyboard, men in make up, etc.

Ohsees back in town tomorrow!

Okay, quick lunch break post. My heros the OHSEES are back in town tomorrow at the Charred Dog House in Davis. Warm Streams, Mayyors and uncut: hunks are also on the bill. A+ show that will be amazing. 7pm. All Ages.
Beer situation: BYOB, Co-op is close for awesome selection of beer.
Deal of the week: Blue Moon at Bevmo for $5.99 / 6 pack!!!!

(They have a weird website, but I love that drawing after the intro page.)

I just read that Blue Moon is brewed by Coors?!?! Mother fucker!
Quote:
"Coors does not actively advertise the fact that the brew is owned by Coors on the belief that being associated with a major national brewery would diminish its credibility among aficionados."

I have an uncle that brings a cooler of Coors to every family gathering. I guess we can now bond over some sort of similarity....this news makes me kind of depressed. Back to work!!

Pierced Arrows!

I should have posted this yesterday and totally forgot.

I'm sorry! The show was rad. Pierced Arrows/Dead Moon were great, even with the minor technical difficulties. And of course, I always love the Losin' Streaks!

Look out for another work-break post.

Brand New Mailorder Records!

The mail order is stocked with some brand new records for your collecting enjoyment.

I've stocked up on some of my favs on Slovenly Records.

7"s
Ape City R&B "Dyn-o-mite"
Black Lips "Does She Want"
Billy Childish and the Musicians of the British Empire "It Should Be Me"
Hipshakes "OK Alright"
Slab City "Tall Can"

And a re-stock of Th' Losin' Streaks "Sounds of Violence" LP which I flew through.

Head to the Out of Order Store!

This is just one of many updates to come in my mission to continually upgrade the mail order. Prices are postage paid, and you can easily pay with Pay Pal, or e-mail me if you'd rather go the money order route. (Pay Pal is preferred!)

Still newish items include the new Mattress "In My Pocket" 7inch, which was one of my ultimate favorites from last year. We've also got a few remaining copies of the Hipshakes "You Make me Malfunction"- which is another dead-on zinger.

Thanks for the ongoing support!

Take care,

-HK

New Vegetarian Cafe in Sacramento!

Au Lac Veggie
A Vegetarian Cafe
3500 Stockton Blvd Map
Sacramento, CA 95820

Andrew and I checked this place out last Sunday and it was awesome! Good food at an amazing price, and BIG servings. We ordered 1 Appetizer, 2 entrees, 2 pots of tea and it was a little over $10 for each of us.

Check out their site.

It's a while out of Midtown, but worth the short trip over to Stockton and Broadway. I recommend the Eggplant sautéed with basil, it was YUM! There's also a 15% offer on the page listed above. Support these small, awesome places!

Happy New Year!

Happy New Year everyone! 2007 was an uber crappy year, so here's to an awesome 2008!

I've got lots of plans for this year, including a new issue of the Out of Order zine- all online. No having to worry about messed up copies, outrageous costs, and killing too many trees.

With that said, the deadline for records to review is Feb 1st. Please send in vinyl (prefered), tapes, and CDs. (No MP3s please).

Out of Order
PO Box 72775
Davis, CA 95617

Thanks for your past years of support. This year marks the 4th year of Out of Order Records.

Take care!
