Record Reviews #4
Black Time
Beat of the Traps 7”
Yakisikana
Black Time is one of my new favorite bands. After hearing their Blackout CD on In the Red, I was hooked. Great trashed-out garage punk songs, with a blues edge. The B side “Crawlin” is my favorite, but I have a tendency to lean toward the flipside of records. I know this is an import, but you’ll wanna find a way to get a copy of this!
Fe Fi Fo Fums
Shake All Night LP
Boom Boom of Renton
Finally! A full length LP from these great, Seattle garage punkers! Fans of Supercharger, Metros and Black Lips rejoice! If you didn’t get a chance to grab the Electrofize Me 7”, well it’s on this LP, along with a bunch of other greats. The title track is right on, along with “One More Chance”, “Jackie Be Good” and my favorite, “Fuck New Wave”. The artwork is simple, and effective, the music is a couple chords with some fuzzy vocals and straightforward lyrics. Features the drummer of another great Seattle band, the Suspicions. This is one of the best records I’ve heard so far this year.
Knaughty Knights
Tommy of the River 7”
Shattered
V/A
The Funhouse Comp Thing CD
MyFatAss Productions
I first heard about this comp months ago when the Invisible Eyes came to town, and I was DJing at the show they played at. We got to talking about Seattle, and they mentioned this compilation. A few months later, KDVS got a copy of this record, so I decided to throw it on.
Kicking off this CD is the Fe Fi Fo Fums, a band that immediately grabbed me a year or so earlier with their great 7inch on Boom Boom of Renton, and who now have an awesome LP out on the same label. The Invisible Eyes cover “Spooky”, which they played live when I saw them, which is a great match for them, and some other standouts include tracks by the Primate 5, Head, Pulses, Freak Outs, Armitage Shanks, the Blank Its and the Bugs.

KDVS Record Swap / Trashies 7inch / Zine

People are already asking about the next one. We are going to shoot for another in about six months, so look around for us in November.
I've got some great pics from the event, check them out right here!
Trashies 7inches are selling well! Already several have gone out through mail order. You should start seeing them appear on well-known mail order sites, distros, & labels like Underground Medicine, Know Crap, Florida's Dying, Plastic Idol, Razorcake, and more in the next couple of weeks.
You can also order them directly from Out of Order right here.
Onto the Out of Order zine...#3 is doing well! I keep having to go make more copies! #4 is already in the early stages. Since copying has gotten so expensive, I'm thinking about having room for AD space, and making them REALLY cheap. This will help off-set the cost of copying, and help those who get ads get their name out. I will have more on that later. If you are interested in getting an ad and/or saving your ad space, e-mail me at Heather@outoforderrecords.com.
Also, send me records so I can review them for the next zine, and post them in this blog! The address is:

KDVS is having its annual, on-air fundraiser starting today, and
running until the 30th. This is an extremelyimportant time for
KDVS, when we look to you, our listeners to help keep us on the
air. Our budgets are cut every year, and over 2/3 of our yearly
budget come from the Fundraiser.
KDVS is a free-form, non-commercial, community run radio
station. We broadcast at 9,200 hundred watts, and also stream
online at www.kdvs.org.
All your donations are tax deductible, and you can also pick up
one or more of our great premiums compiled of music, t-shirts,
gift certificates, books, magazines, and more!
You can pledge any amount, big or small, but to receive
premiums, the levels are $25 for students/low income, and $40
for community members.
For $100 you can HOST YOUR OWN RADIO SHOW. You get to take over
the KDVS airwaves for an hour, and play whatever music your

several projects in the works including a tower move to increase
our wattage and KDVS Recordings- KDVS’ own Record Label!
From a pocketful of change, to a hefty check, anything helps us
out, and we appreciate any and every donation.
Also, anyone who donates on my show receives a free, specialty
compilation of punk, early hardcore and power pop compiled by
myself. So please, tune in from 8-9pm on Tuesday night and help
me make my show goal of $600 and keep KDVS going for another

Record Reviews #3
Angry Angles
“Things are Moving” 7inch
Shattered
Woah, this is amazing. Now I know why is band is selling over a thousand copies of their records. Those lucky mid-western bastards. I wish we had a band like this here. I heard “Stab You Dead” and I thought, wow, this is pretty good, than the catchy intro of “You Call it Love” and that’s where I knew this was an amazing record. I didn’t even need to hear the A-side, but of course, I listened, and the intro to “Things are Moving” has this great Reatards-esc guitar. OK, this is a band you must own EVERYTHING by.
King Khan and BBQ Show
“S/T”
Goner
One of thee best records of 2005 hands down, (along with the Black Lips), King Khan and BBQ, both prior members of the Spaceshits, gives us one of those records that people will remember; I have no doubt it will be a classic. Both are super talented musicians who play in other projects as well. (BBQ aka Mark Sultan currently plays solo and has had records out on Alien Snatch and Bomp, has also been in Les Sexareenos and is also in the new Mind Controls. King Khan also does time with his band the Sensational Shrines.)
It does no good to point out superb tracks on this record, because you’d just be writing out the entire track list.
Nostalgic 50s rock n roll with a garage twist- you’ll get seriously hooked.
Sleepers
“The Less an Object” CD
Tim Kerr Records
An older release (1996) that I think some people missed, originally recorded in the late 70s and early 80s. Features Ricky Williams, former drummer of Crime, & also played in Flipper and the Toiling Midgets. This compiles their first 5-song EP, a single, and miscellaneous tracks. Their best work is the most sought out after EP (reissued a while back). I don’t know what happened after this, the band departed from their early sound, got sort of electronic and experimental, and lost some of their allure for me, but it’s a nice retrospective none-the-less. “No Time” is one of my favorite songs ever. This is worth it for that song alone.
Sneaky Pinks
“I Can’t Wait” 7inch
Rubber Vomit
Three fun numbers by two dudes who sound like they are having way too much fun. Also features a member of the Okmonics. “I Can’t Wait” is a super catchy number about getting young chicks, as is “Kill Kill Kill” with it’s irresistible chorus. “Kill, kill, kill, die, die, die, yyyyyyeeeaaaahhhh-oooooohhhhh”. Comes in super DIY-foil sleeve. Only 300 made, act fast!

What's going on
I am down to under 100 Dissimilars "Jimmy's Room" 7inches. If you haven't yet picked one of these up, you can get them directly from Out of Order Records. I know several of our distributors / mailorder friends are out, but I think you still may be able to one through Razorcake, Tonevendor, Wrench (UK), or P-Trash (Germany).
Last but not least, I'll be posting more reviews in the next couple days. This will include the s/t Bugs CDr, Karate Party, Kill the Hippies double CD, and other stuff I've had lying around, or just picked up.

Record Reviews #2
Fevers, the
“Gaan Daar Waar de Meisjes Zijn”
Alien Snatch
If you ever listen to my radio show, you know I butcher foreign names. Hell, English is my first language and I butcher that. Strangely enough, this record is sung in English, but the title is in Dutch, on a German label, and the band is apparently from Minnesota. Go figure. Luckily, it doesn’t deter me from what a great record this is. This is the Fevers’ first record that came out in 2002. Translated, the title means, “To go there where the little girls are”. I’ve heard it enough to know my favorite songs. “C’Mon on my Baby” (is that a typo?), “Born to Be Your Baby”, “Girl After Girl” and “Ooo That Kiss”.
This is a great Power Pop record, on that super-thick, European vinyl us Americans just eat up. They’ve been getting comparisons to the Nerves, Teenage Head and the Real Kids. You can’t go wrong there.
Fevers, the
“Love Always Wins”
Alien Snatch
This record holds up well in the shadow of their great debut LP. I don’t think it’s as good; but it does have its strong points. My favorites are “Get Your Luvin”, “My Ly Ly”, and “Dance”.
Kidnappers
Neon Signs
Rip Off
The first full-length from these guys came out on Alien Snatch- a punkier sounding record than the new one which has a more power pop edge. It included covers by Teengenerate and Loli and the Chones (boy, what a calling for Rip Off!) We first learned that Rip Off was coming back with this record after a short hiatus. This record is slicker than a lot of past Rip Off releases. (Of course recording has become cheaper and easier these days.) “Talk to You”, “Trainticket” and “Goodbye” are all good, mid-tempo power pop tracks. Germany is really cranking them out. Keep it up.
“Better Off Dead”
Rave Up
One of my favorite Boston bands, La Peste was a band that went through a couple different line-ups, and varied their sound. You hear early hardcore in tracks like “Lease on Life” and “Army of Apathy”, found on the ‘A Wicked Good Time’ compilation released back in 1982 on Boston’s Modern Method label (part of the still functioning Newbury Comics), and more recently collected on the ‘V.2.0’ on Smash Easy Records. But what really got everyone was “Better Off Dead”, from their first single, which ended up on Killed by Death #9, a Rhino Records ‘DIY’ compilation, and a couple others. But then you also hear some great power pop songs. This was a band that could go either way and pull it off.
We’ve seen several labels jumping on the La Peste bandwagon. First Matador, with their collection in 1996, then the young Smash Easy, and now Italy’s Rave Up is taking a shot at it. (Dionysus is said to be next.)
“Write Down Your Number” is an irresistibly great power pop song, and probably the best song on this collection that hasn’t been on any of their other anthologies. “TKO”, standing for Total Knock Out is another good pick, as well as “Blood”, “Too Many Nights” and “We’re in the Army Now”. This is an import worth getting.
S/T
Rip Off
This Seattle trio brings fun, 3-chord garage rock to the plate with catchy, pop melodies and charming female vocals. This ten-song LP contains the single “We’re All Wrong b/w Memory” that the band self-released in 2004 on their own Nerve Wracking label, as well as some brand-new stuff.
Act fast to get one of 200 on blue vinyl.

A Few Notes
- Thanks to everyone who went to the Invisible Eyes show in Davis last Tuesday. It was a ton of fun, and I had a great time. To keep up to date on local shows in the Davis/Sacramento area, please check here frequently.
- The Trashies 7inch is moving along! I'm really excited for this release. We are looking for a release date around April or so.
- More thanks to the folks who tune in, and stream my radio show, "Live in the Warzone". I have a lot of fun doing that, and it's been going for over 3 years! I have some fun stuff coming up on the show in the next couple months including live bands, themed shows and more! Keep an eye on that page for info.
- I also want to mention the Garagepunk.com podcasts. I've been totally addicted to these, and I listen in at work all the time. There are some great shows on there, so I highly recommend it. If you know of any other great podcasting & independent streaming sites, please post them in the comment section!
- Another couple highlights I'd like to post are these local labels. They have been putting out some awesome releases, and if you don't know about them, you should. These include Plastic Idol, S-S and Weird Forest.

KDVS is a freeform, non-commercial radio station located in Davis, CA. For over 40 years, they've brought quality music, news, public affairs and sports programming to the airwaves. In the 90s, they began streaming online and archiving shows on the internet.
Their budget is cut yearly by the University of California, Davis, so every year they dedicate a week to raising money so they can stay on the air.
Over the past year, with the help of a dedicated staff and volunteers, KDVS is working on increasing their wattage, moving their tower location and has had several great changes. You can now view DJ playlists in real time online, while the DJ is on the air, we've brought back daily news briefs, and other several internal improvements. More great advances are coming soon!
Not only will you feel great about helping this non-profit organization, but you can also receive premiums, or gifts in exchange for your tax deductible donation!
For $25 if you are a student/low-income, or $40 for community members, you can pick from a huge selection of music packages, gift certificates, t-shirts, books, and more. For a $100 donation, you can even host your own hour of programming!
More information will be posted online at www.kdvs.org soon. You'll be able to view the premiums online as well as pledge there during that week of fundraising.
Please support freeform, community radio! It's a dying breed!

Thanks to Tim Matranga and Liz over at Fools Foundation, for their help in setting up this record swap! I would be lost if I didn't have their help in putting this together. It's been nearly 2 years, but finally we are having another of our great record swaps!
Record buyers and sellers from all over are welcome to join us, May 21st in Sacramento. You will be able to rent tables to sell your records, t-shirts, magazines, posters, videos, pins, etc, or just come in and buy records. KDVS DJs will be spinning live as well!
More information coming soon on how to reserve your table, times, etc.

Selling Out!
Today, I just sold out of Battleship "Presents Princess" 12inches (I can't believe they lasted as long as they did...), Digital Leather "Simulator" 7inches and Killed by Death #20 LPs.
There are still plenty of great records there- I still have a couple copies of the 1st pressing of the Minds "We Got the Pop" 7inch, some import titles from Europe, etc. Take a look at what's available here.

Radio Playlists 2/7 & 1/31
You can listen to this week's (02/07) show right here. It's really simple, just click the MP3 stream link. There are two. If you have dial up, you'll want the 56kpbs (I feel for you), but if you are lucky enough to have DSL, click the 128kpbs, the quality is way better.
