Record Reviews #7

Plethora. What a great word, “Plethora”. I have a plethora of records that have been piling up around here. Every time I have a few extra bucks (and sometimes not), I’ve been buying records, and I’ve also been sent some records to review, which I thank you for! Here are a small handful of reviews. More to come!

The Ape-Shits/The Gash
Split 7inch
Big Action Records

This is an awesome split with two Texas bands I’ve never heard of. Both sides are really good garage punk and the bands compliment each other well. The Ape-Shits feature a bunch of members from the Dirty Sweets. The Gash are another band I’ve never heard of, but I’m impressed. They remind me of the Kidnappers at their punkier moments. Too bad they are already broken up, they sound like they could have been a promising live band.

Digital Leather
S/T
I Don’t Feel a Thing / King of the Monsters

This is the first LP out by Arizona’s Digital Leather on one of the most beautiful records I’ve ever seen: an amazing split colored vinyl- half pink, and half black. This is a blast from the past synth record. You may find yourself wondering, what year is it? Sean Foree is extremely talented in creating these catchy, heart-gripping melodies, and lyrics like in “Fools Heart Mechanism.” ‘When I had that heart, I was just a fool.’
On this record, you’re also treated to greats like, “I’m Wrong”, “Depression” and an early version of “Black Flowers from the Future”. Fortunately, you can’t go wrong with any of these tracks on this record. I remain in awe of this one-man band.

Haunted George
Shotgun in My Mouth
Solid Sex Lovie Doll

Straight from the Mojave Desert, Haunted George is one of those artists’ that comes around and just blows your mind, just as the title track of this 7inch- “Shot Gun in My Mouth”. The sound is very raw, with twangy guitar chords, cut throat vocals, and simple drums that only a one-man band can deliver. Obsessed with war history, the old west, and weird records, check out his blog for a look into the genius of Haunted George, and you’ll get a better understanding of where he’s coming from.
Live, he’s just as brilliant.
Your record collection should not be without of any of his records.

Home Blitz
Live Outside
Self Released

This is one of those 7inches that catches you off guard in a fantastic way. I’m attached to the B-side, “Feeling Cold”, a simplistically sweet, lo-fi song with the charm of Beat Happening, or fellow current bands’ like Tyvek. The chorus, “I feel like riding, bikes, tonight…but mine’s been in the shop all day” rings in my head. This was also recorded live on a street corner in Princeton, New Jersey. How can this not win you over? You can even hear cars passing by in the recording, adding an extra special touch that makes it truly unique.

Website Problems

Hi Folks- sorry for the lack of updates on my website. The program I use to make it is having major problems. I'm hoping to switch over to Dream Weaver next month, and with that, expect a re-design!

With that said, e-mail me with your list of things to mail order, and I'll let you know what is in stock, and also what shipping will be. I usually ship media mail, unless you'd perfer another method. (I ship 7inches first class if they are light enough.)

Thanks & Happy Holidays!

The Haps

Hello folks, sick of holiday music, yet? Meeeeee too. The post office, the bank, the grocery store...everywhere I go, they are playing the most rediculous shit. Anyways, some news on Out of Order!

-Will update radio playlists by this weekend. (Things are hectic as usual.)
-Out of Order Zine #4 is in production! Working on a bunch of cool interviews, record reviews, an article on punk rock roadies, and other fun goodies.

I'm also taking cheap ads for the next zine, so if you are interested, I'd really appriciate it to help fund this issue. I'll also consider trades!

Playlists, and updates soon!

I know, I know. I'm slacking a bit. But not really slacking, just super busy. I'll get my last two radio playlists up within the next couple days. If you want to see what I've been playing and/or stream the show, click here.

It's almost 3am- I'm working on school assignments, including a midterm I've got next week, plus I've been pulling extra hours at work from a mixture of being busy and needing the money because I'm back in super-broke mode.

In the meantime, here's a couple links that deserve attention:

  • Sacramento News Review article about Operation: Restore Maximum Freedom. (By the way, we got shut down during the Hip Hop Groups. Which leads me to this article. I'll have a write up on this event in the future...
  • The newer-ish blog for events in the Sacto Area entitled What's Up Sacto?
  • TYVEK! They've got a song called "Honda", which has been proclaimed by my friends as my theme song. Totally awesome 7" out on X! Records. First pressing gone; I had a hell of a time finding a copy. (I got mine from Goner.)
  • Am also loving Home Blitz. They have two 7inches out that I know of that you can track down fairly easily. They've been getting lots of airplay on KDVS and are loved by many DJs.
  • Last but not least, next KDVS Record Swap I'm co-organizing is Sunday November 5th, 2006 @ Fools Foundation from 9am-3pm. Mark your calenders! If you want to reserve a table to sell stuff, the order form is right here.

Radio Playlist for 08/29/2006 + Radio Birdman!!

I kicked off last weeks' radio show with Australia's RADIO BIRDMAN, who was set to play the Great American Music Hall for the second date of their first ever US tour two days later. I was there, blown away. 25 years after they'd broken up, and they sounded amazing! A band I never thought I'd ever see live, and there I was, in San Francisco on a Thursday night, totally in awe. If you have a chance to see them, GO! Such greats as "Do the Pop", "Burn My Eye" and "Aloha" are not to be missed played live. They even covered "Search and Destroy!"

Cheating Hearts LPs for Sale

I have two copies of the new Cheating Hearts LP for sale. I doubt these are going to make it to the mail order page, since they are Imports, and I’ve only got a couple copies, so I don’t expect these to last.

The Cheating Hearts- S/T (Goodbye Boozy)
$15 postage paid/each.

One is on Red; the other is on Black. Limited to 200 of each color pressing, and hand-numbered! First come, first serve. Great, bluesy garage punk ala the Oblivians from Montreal.
Edit: I had a Pay Pal button up to order it directly, but for some reason, that feature of pay pal is down. Please just send $15 to mailorder(AT)outoforderrecords(DOT)com on Pay Pal. If you want to pick up some other stuff from the mail order, e-mail me what you want, and I’ll total it up for you.

PLEASE STATE WHICH COLOR YOU WANT.

I will get a pay pal system set up soon in the mail order section, so you can order without having to e-mail me your list and have me calculate postage. These things take time, and that is rare these days.

Other Stuff...

Another thing of (semi)-importance, is that I've been selling some junk on eBay. Mostly music, music memorabilia and then other junk like books, and clothing.

Anyways, if you are interested, feel free to take a look. I added more stuff this morning, and I'll be adding more stuff throughout the day and the week. I'm pretty low on cash these days, so I'm trying to get rid of stuff and generate a little income. You can view my stuff for sale right here.

I've also got lots of great stuff in the mail order right now. Angry Angles 7inches, Genetic Disorder Zines, Lost Sounds CDs, Bob Burns and the Breakups CDs, and lots of other cool stuff. Anything helps me out, so buy buy buy!

I've got another batch of record reviews coming up soon as well. This includes the Ape-Shits/the Gash split 7inch, Ralphs LP, and more.

Big thanks to the FEELERS who put on an awesome show in Davis on Sunday. Opening acts Rodox and Switched-on Vultures were way rad too. Thanks to everyone who made it out; it was one of my favorite shows so far this summer.

Thanks for the support & all the best!

Record Reviews #6 (7inch Frenzy)

Heartattacks
Radio Radio
Ken Rock

This band is going to have a hard time shaking the Teengenerate comparisons, but who’d want to lose that anyways? This is an awesome four-song doozy of spazz-out in your living room, fuck-your-neighbor-I’m-turning-this-up-really-loud-punk rock. Whenever I’ve had a bad day at work, I can crank “Quit My Job” and I do feel a little better. Thank you Sweden for giving us great bands like the Heartattacks!
www.heartattacks.tk

Heartattacks
Your Lies
Plastic Idol

When Mario told me he was releasing this record, I wasn’t that familiar with the Heartattacks. Between that announcement, and the release of this record, I acquired their Here Comes… LP on P-Trash, and their Radio Radio EP. Where had I been? This translucent yellow vinyl holds three great tracks, including an awesome cover of the Features’ “Floozie of the Neighborhood”. My favorite track is “Wait Around”, but all are great. Plus, the guy who recorded this 7inch goes by Junk E. Male. How can you not love that?
www.heartattacks.tk

Manikins
Spend the Night Alone
Plastic Idol

One track from their Lie Cheat and Steal LP on P-Trash, and two unreleased tracks- here’s to striking gold once again. I’m completely stuck on “Still afraid of girls”; I love everything about that song. It’s a bittersweet, catchy, power pop song with an irresistible chorus. This record has the capability of being one of my favorites of the year. Pressed on simple, but effective white wax with a crème-colored label, this is one you shouldn’t pass on.
www.the-manikins.com

Thee Mothballs
Come out of the Closet
Car-Hole Adult Party

Great sloppy, garage punk with keyboards mixed in for an ultimate spill-your-beer-all–over-the-place dance party. For the second side, you start the tracks from the inside out. How cool is that? Almost as cool as you’ll look once you throw this on the turntable. You like the Mummies? You like Supercharger? You like the Statics? You’ll like this.

Nix
Speed Freaks E.P.
Self Released

Say hello to Portland’s Nix, featuring Rob of the Minds. This is some great low-fi, snotty punk rock. It reminds me of the Sneaky Pinks with the goofy lyrics, and simple guitar riffs, but instead of writing songs about underage girls and hotdogs, they sing about bad teeth and speed freaks. Their previous 7inch didn’t disappoint, and either does this.

Sexaphone
Fuck Your Space
Yakisakana

Sexaphone is a UK two-piece featuring Janie Too Bad (great punk name) from Black Time. Both tracks on the B-Side are the best on this record. Like Black Time, they’ve got catchy, bass-heavy riffs, but this time it’s all female vocals that remind me of Toby Vail.
On a completely, unrelated note, does anyone notice how all the Yakisakana records smell like burnt coffee? I think it’s the ink on the sleeves.

S.I.D.S.
Kandy Kane
Stick Figure

Anxious synth-driven music with frantic keyboards and urgent vocals. This record got really hyped, but when its all said and done, a little disappointing. I think in part of all the Screamers comparisons, and that will only let you down since no band can ever hold up to such standards. The b-side, “Space Ranger in a Manger” is my favorite.

Coming Soon: More 7inches and I’ll start on the LPs, which include Crash Normal, the Ejectors, Frustration, OCs, and more…

New Mail Order Additions

The Out of Order Mail Order sale is over. Thanks to all those who took advantage of it. Some items remain at reduced prices so I can clear room for new stuff. Speaking of new stuff...

First up is the new Bob Burns and the Breakups Frustration CD. Only 500 released on the band's own Mad Cook label. An LP version is coming soon on P Trash, and a single on Plastic Idol. Good three chord garage punk that will sit well with your Dirtnap and Rip Off records.

We've also got the
newest Plastic Idol release, the Manikins Spend the Night Alone 7inch. This is easily one of the best records so far this year. Three great, catchy power pop songs on white vinyl.

Act fast! We've only got these in limited quantities!

Night Wounds Interview

Here’s an Interview with one of my current, favorite L.A. bands, Night Wounds. They are a bunch of young kids, who make great music, adding elements of no-wave, and spastic punk rock to concoct something fresh and fun. Visit their myspace page to listen to tracks, view photos, etc. They are currently on tour, so if you have a chance to see them, DO IT! They put on a great show.

This interview was done over e-mail, a few days before they left on their coast-to-coast tour.

Interview & photos by Heather Klinger from Operation: Restore Maximum Freedom III.

Out of Order:
Los Angeles seems to be embracing young artists with venues like the Smell, and you guys are no exception. Another young band that comes to mind is Mika Miko, another favorite in this area. How do you like Los Angeles? Do you think there is a supportive scene for the kind of music you guys play right now?

Night Wounds: I think there definitely is. Visiting Los Angeles prior to moving here, everyone seemed to be very tight knit no matter what kind of music they played. It wasn't strange to see a bill with a band like us, a band like Mika Miko and a solo noise project. I think that still exists, but doesn't seem to happen as often as it used to. Regardless, everyone can be super supportive. Bands kind of have three or four cliques of people they can play to and get different reactions from all of them, so it's not like you play one show and you've been exposed to everyone. Bands have many opportunities and it's great that there is not one but several solid diy show spaces and it seems like everyone gets a chance to play if they want to.

OOO: Who are your favorite locals to play with?

NW: Abe Vigoda and Knit Witch.

OOO: You are going to the east coast, and back. It looks like a pretty grueling tour schedule. Has anyone else in the band toured in other bands? How have you prepared for this tour?

NW: Ryan has roadied a couple times. Jamie has not explored a lot of these places so it's probably most scary/exciting to him. Our first tour was a 40 day road trip as a two piece a couple years back and we played all over, but it wasn't a solid tour. We played about... 15 shows. Preparation has been beyond frustrating. My world has kind of collapsed prior to leaving so I've been dealing with huge helpings of everyday bullshit mixed with intense drama. It'll all pay off though!

OOO: What kind of vehicle are you guys touring in? How did you acquire it?

NW: We are touring in a small SUV and will carry the drumset. Hot Girls Cool Guys are touring in a minivan with all the amps/guitars. Jamie's parents gave it to him (lucky) so we're going to bow to them!
OOO: Where's the weirdest place you've ever played?

NW: Oh man! Ryan booked a show at his old friend's house for New Years Eve. We showed up and I could see a dude warming up on his trombone from the street. Turned out to be a straight up hippy party and I felt like I was from a different world as them. By the time we played, everyone was on the roof and we played to a mix of punk rock locals, girls in huge skirts and our two or three friends and everything broke one song in so we stopped and tried to sleep, but not for long as the hippies moved the dance party into the living room and ended up puking all over the couch I wanted to sleep on.

OOO: How did you like playing at KDVS' Operation: Restore Maximum Freedom III festival?

NW: Man that shit was a blast! I think we made a wise choice by playing where we did. Ettrick, Clip'd Beaks, Eddie the Rat, Erase Errata and pretty much everyone was awesome. I'd have to say it was firmly planted in between a great time and an experience, because it definitely was weird, but we have no regrets for going up there! Sacramento-area is always good to us.

OOO: You guys have had your music released (or being released) on a variety of medias- vinyl, CD, and even cassettes. Do you think cassettes are still viable? What is your favorite media?

NW: Cassettes are great, aesthetically. I think it's a rad medium but at the same time I think it's something most commonly thought of as a part of noise culture and not punk rock again. But there are plenty of labels making that no longer the case, suck as Fuck It Tapes. I still love cassettes I just dont know where to play them because tape decks seem like these ancient artifacts you have to search out now! That is bizarre to me, how vinyl survived decades and decades but tapes disappeared. My favorite format is the vinyl LP.

OOO: Were there any key bands that really impacted you, and made you pick up instruments?

NW: Yes, there are so many. The Ex, DNA, Red Transistor, Swirlies, Crass, Screamers and Lydia Lunch are all immediately influences. I think those are aparent, but what also really pumps us up is DJ Screw (the late Houston DJ who slowed down rap records) and personally speaking, lately all I can listen to is the "dud" T-Rex albums like "Futuristic Dragon". That record blows my mind!

OOO: Both Davis and Sacramento have been supportive of Night Wounds, and come out for your shows. I also hear lots of people talking about you guys, too. Besides your hometown, have you found this to be true anywhere else?

NW: Another place that comes to mind is Phoenix, AZ. Sacramento and Phoenix are two cities we will probably drive to do one off shows at. That's a good sign considering they are both five or six hours away from us!

OOO: Thanks for doing the interview! Have fun on tour, be safe, and we look forward to seeing you guys on your way home at the end of July!

NW: Thanks a ton! See you soooooooon.

Videos

It's a very warm June night here in Northern California, and it's too hot to sleep, so I'm straying from record reviews, and posting some awesome videos I just found, or have known about on you tube. I can't believe some of this stuff exists! It's pretty amazing...

Tall Dwarfs "The Brain That Wouldn't Die"
This song comes off a great New Zealand compilation entitled Tuatara. I first heard this song a few years ago off of that record, and it's been one of my favorites since. Other greats on that comp include the Gordons, the Clean and the Verlaines.

The Clean "Tally Ho"
Speaking of the Clean, they have a couple video's up. Here's "Tally Ho". Not one of my favorite songs- I'm more prone to "Getting Older", "Billy Two", "Anything Could Happen" and "Platypus", but still a neat watch.

The Boys "Weekend"
Another one of those cheesy power pop songs you can't help but love...

Beat Happening "Cry for a Shadow"
Another older, influential band. Here's one from Beat Happening!

Chrome "Meet You in the Subway"
This is hands down one of my favorite Chrome songs. This was taken from one of the Target videos. If you've yet to see any of those, they are a great series made in the Late 70s and 80s by Joe Reece in San Francisco who ran Target Video, and later covered punk, no wave, synthpunk and hardcore around the world, and got footage of several great bands including Devo, the Mutants, Bob, Dead Kennedys, Black Flag, The Screamers, Tuxedo Moon and countless others.
(I wish there was more info on the internet about Target Video...)

Record Reviews #5

Bright Ideas
Saturdays and the Turning Tides
Rocket Science Alliance

Great pop from Sacramento! Features Scott Miller (Bananas, Nar), Marie Davenport (Bananas, Karate Party) and Tim White (Knockoffs). “Cut My Hair” and “I’m Getting Ready” remain two of my favorites on this CD, along with the crowd pleaser “Casanova’s Memoirs” but I can’t say a bad thing about any of these 8 songs. Limited to 100 copies and produced by the infamous Chris Woodhouse, this is destined to be gone before you know it.

Digital Leather
Monologue
Shattered

My first experience with this band was the Arizona Incest compilation, and then came some CDr releases, and then the single on Plastic Idol, which floored me. Digital Leather does some great, dark, synth punk. You could easily fool someone that this band was from the early 80’s, and maybe put out by Survival, Mute or 415 Records. I’m prone to “Black flowers from the future”, “I tell my sorrows to the stones”, “These Patterns” and “Fantasy boys”. Comparisons to the Normal, Units, and contemporaries Angry Angles are not far off.

Standard Tribesmen
4 Song 7”
Borox

Comprised of all the members of the Sores, this caught me off guard in a good way. It’s been sitting in my to-listen-to pile, and I regret letting it sit so long. Spray-painted sleeve, blank label, simple insert; the music is as raw and primitive as the packaging. Four bluesy garage numbers that will get constant rotation on your turntable. Standouts: “Riverside Strangler” and “Headache”.

V/A
Killed By Trash Vol. 1
P-Trash

Another record I’d really been waiting for. This Contains 20 Killed by Death covers! Being the Killed by Death freak I am, I had to have this. Standouts include Jeffery Novak doing the Mad’s “I Hate Music”, Carbona’s doing “Don’t Hide Your Hate” by Filth, Feelers doing the Gizmo’s “Amerika First”, Digger and the Pussy Cats nailing “Better off Dead” by the Wipers, and my favorite, Black Time and their “Son of Sam” cover originally done by the Chain Gang.

Great modern punk and garage bands doing trashy killed by death covers. This is one of the best compilations to come out so far in the 21st century. I can’t wait for volume 2!!!

Won't Leave My Turntable

In no order...

Records that won't leave my turntable...

Ocs “Songs About Death & Dying Vol. 3” (Yik Yak)
Sic Alps “The Soft Tour in Rough Form” (Mt. St. Mtn.)
Digital Leather “Monologue” (Shattered)
V/A “Killed by Trash Vol. 1” (P-Trash)
Country Teasers “The Empire Strikes Back” (In the Red)
Carbonas “S/T” (Raw Deluxe)

Reviews coming very soon. I've got a huge stack of stuff to review, as well as a couple interviews I'm working on. New stuff coming soon to the mail order as well.

Last Three Radio Playlists

Sorry these have taken so long! I've been crazy busy. Luckily, I have a year of college done, I'm almost done with one of my jobs, and things should be a tiny bit less hectic. I plan on getting another zine or two done this summer, keep on doing the KDVS radio show, maybe do some online radio shows, as well as other fun projects. Anyways, check these out. You can listen to this week's show right here.

Also, there's a way to podcast my show from the KDVS secret archives but I haven't figured that out yet. Once I do, I'll post it!
